Ant Navigation: Reading Geometrical Signposts
Ants often travel along complex pheromone trail systems between their nest and foraging areas. A new and surprising discovery is that Pharaoh's ants can work out from the geometry of individual branch points on the trail whether they are heading towards or away from the nest.

The directional responses of turtles to simulated magnetic coordinates of positions in the sea have given insight into the turtles' route-like and map-like behaviour.

infection, even when challenged with comparatively low numbers of bacteria. The result is a triumph for the approach of mining bacterial metabolic diversity for applied uses. In this case, Dong et al. capitalized on the discovery that many bacteria can degrade, and so inactivate, AHLs. Earlier, the same group 5 had isolated hundreds of bacterial species from soil and screened them for the abili...
متن کاملFisher information distance: a geometrical reading?
This paper is a strongly geometrical approach to the Fisher distance, which is a measure of dissimilarity between two probability distribution functions. The Fisher distance, as well as other divergence measures, are also used in many applications to establish a proper data average. The main purpose is to widen the range of possible interpretations and relations of the Fisher distance and its a...
متن کاملModeling Ant Navigation with an Autonomous
The ability to navigate in a complex environment is crucial for both animals and robots. Many animals use a combination of strategies to return to signiicant locations in their environment. For example, the desert ant Cataglyphis is able to explore its desert habitat for hundreds of meters while foraging and return back to its nest precisely and on a straight line. The three main strategies tha...
